Fur Rendezvous has been one of Anchorage’s favorite traditions for 82 years. This 10-day festival is jam-packed with events for all ages, and most of the action is conveniently located just blocks away from our Westmark Anchorage Hotel. This means you can head back and forth to your home base to warm up, grab a drink or even unload your shopping as many times as you’d like. Here are five favorite activities not to be missed this year!
It’s hard to imagine a more perfect combination of wacky and exciting than an elaborately decorated outhouse hurtling down Fourth Avenue in downtown Anchorage. Except, perhaps, when it’s in a race with a bunch of other decorated outhouses at the same time! Prize categories include the best theme, most colorful, people’s choice, cleanest, best architecture and the coveted Red Lantern Award. Whether you compete for one of the many prestigious trophies on Feb. 25 or simply choose to be a spectator to this sport, there are only winners at this competition.
Calling all runners! On March 4, Fur Rondy wants to see just how fast you can dash with a herd of reindeer at your heels! Put together your best costume and round up your herd for this mad dash through downtown Anchorage. (Or just enjoy the whole display from the sidelines).
These veritable works of art are not your everyday snowmen! Peruse these sculptures crafted from 8-foot square cubes of snow and cast your vote for the winning piece. Last year’s first-place winner was a seemingly life-size tornado filled with (snow) salmon entitled “Salmonado.” You’ll have to come and see for yourself what will take the cake this year!
Have you ever experienced an outdoor winter carnival? There’s something very novel about enjoying funnel cakes, caramel apples and riding a Ferris wheel surrounded by a snowy scene. The kids are guaranteed to love it, but even if you don’t have kids in tow, it’s still a wildly fun time.
Celebrate everything we all love about Alaska winter with Anchorage’s largest parade! On Feb. 25, Rondy royalty and anyone else who wants to participate will march down Fifth and Sixth Avenues on themed floats to show just how great of a time Alaska can have in the winter.
Bonus: Fireworks Extravaganza
Because of the midnight summer sun, winter is really the best time to see fireworks in the 49th state. The Fur Rondy fireworks show on Feb. 25 is one of our favorite parts of the festival, and Westmark guests are in luck because they have some of the best seats in town right from their hotel room windows!
