Juneau: Alaska’s state capital
Juneau is located on the Gastineau Channel in the Southeast Alaska panhandle and is the only U.S. capital not connected by road to the rest of the state. The city offers a wide range of cultural activities and outdoor excursions, many of which are within walking distance from the Westmark Baranof Hotel.
Hop aboard the Mount Roberts Tramway, one of Juneau’s most popular attractions, and take in breathtaking views of the Chilkat Mountains, Gastineau Channel, Douglas Island and Silver Bow Basin. Once you’ve reached the peak of Mount Roberts, visit the Chilkat Theater where you can learn about Native Tlingit culture, enjoy lunch at the Timberline Bar & Grill, or enjoy the towering Sitka spruce and wildflowers of the sub-alpine meadows and parkland.
A trip to Juneau isn’t complete without a visit to Mendenhall Glacier, located about 12 miles from downtown. From the visitor center, enjoy views of the glacier, icebergs and lake, while learning about how Mendenhall Glacier has shaped the valley’s ecosystem. In winter months, book the Westmark Baranof Ski Package and hit the slopes at Eaglecrest Ski Area where you can rent equipment and sign up for a range of lessons. Or perhaps take in a show at Juneau’s Perseverance Theater, the state’s flagship professional theater, offering classical, contemporary and world premiere productions throughout its September-May season.
The city is also the perfect home base for a trip to the spectacular Glacier Bay National Park, where tidewater glaciers cave into pristine waters and wildlife abounds. Whether you’re looking to take a weeklong excursion or simply to find a way to spend the afternoon, the knowledgeable hotel staff at the Westmark Baranof can answer your questions and point you in the right direction.
The Westmark Baranof Hotel is located in the heart of Alaska’s state capital within walking distance to the waterfront, boutique shopping, cruise ship docks and government buildings.
